How Gradual Progression Turns Into Exponential Growth

Life is like riding a bicycle. Obviously, when we first start training to ride, we try to balance ourselves and move steady. We inevitably fall over and then continuously try again. As time goes on, the process gets faster because bit by bit, you get better and better at setting up to ride and then taking off.

Just as much as this process is true in learning how to ride a bike. It is true in every aspect of development in our lives. If you have someone that use to be a seasoned fitness freak and he took a break for a while. He would find that he would easily train himself back into shape in a very short period of time, if he was to start training again.

This is because of the reps. Just like once you learn how to ride a bike, he never could really forget it. The same rule applies to whatever we invest our time doing. It starts out gradual until we find our balance. And then as that sets, we’re able to get faster and faster at what it is we’re doing, while staying efficient and failing a lot less in the little things. Gradual progression (linear growth) turns into faster results (exponential growth) by honing in on whatever it is that’s being pursued with persistence.

We all fall off of our bikes, of course. It’s essential to strengthening our nervous system and exposing us to the thrill of adrenaline (which is no different to the feeling of anxiety, just framed differently). Persisting in making progress (no matter how big or small at the beginning) leads to being able to have a faster bounce back rate, mentally. Ensuring you more wins in a shorter period of time, eventually.

Picking a pursuit, persisting until balance is found and then thrashing the pedals when it’s time.

This process to exponential growth can be found in everything. Progress gets faster after we endure a period of time, learning the balance of it all.
